JAMBA FREEDOM PARK INTO ARECREATION CENTER

Government has given Blantyre City Council a go ahead to t urn Njamba Freedom Park into a recreation centre. Local Government minister Kondwani Nankhumwa said this after a protracted war between the council and Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) who said owned the park. The park is situated just metres away from MBCtv studios and MHC and is renowned for political rallies as this was the place where renowned freedom fighters from Chakufwa Chihana to Bakili Muluzi held their rallies in the run up to the 1993 referendum for multiparty democrcay. Nankhumwa said the government intervened on the matter after disagreements between the council and MHC. “ The jurisdication of making a recreation park falls under the mandate of the council,” he said. He said the Blantyre City Council has already identified an investor who is expected to kick off the works very soon. Other powerful politicians who have held rallies at the park include John Tembo, Gwanda Chakuamba, Joyce Banda and Peter Mutharika. It is fondly dubbed the political battleground for the south. Nankhumwa however did not say when exactly the park would open to the public.
