FOUR MALAWI COMPANY JOIN GAN MALAWI
one way of fighting against youth unemployment in the country, Maldeco Fisheries, Chibuku Products, Carlsberg Malawi and Stansfield Motors Malawi have joined Global Apprenticeships Network – GAN Malawi.
According to Naomi Chirwa, Carlsberg Malawi’s Human Resources Director, joining the National Network helps the company to reduce unemployment problems especially among the youth and also to share experiences with other companies.
“There are millions of young people out of school that are unable to secure employment because they do not have the essential business skills required by the Companies. Young people end up experiencing a difficult school-to-work transition, which can be resolved by Companies offering traineeship and apprenticeship. It is very important for companies to join GAN Malawi to share best practices, advocate and to commit to action around youth employability and skills development,” said Chirwa.
On the other hand, Chibuku Products Limited has joined the national network in efforts to share knowledge and advocate. The company has however over the past years, been consistently engaging Apprentices and Trainees hence joining GNN will help to fulfill one of its obligations of creating jobs for the youth in the country.
Stansfield Motors Malawi was the first official member of the Malawi Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN) - National Network. Confirmation of their membership came just after the initial GAN National Network kicked off its meeting in Blantyre on 19 May 2016.
Global Apprenticeships Network started late in 2013 as an initiative which was coordinated by the International Organization of Employers (IOE) with the support from the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Some of the global companies working with GAN include; Samsung Electronics, Huawei, IBM, and The MasterCard Foundation.
Meanwhile, The Employers Consultative Association of Malawi – ECAM is the representative of the GAN network in Malawi.
